Backdraft Ball Lights Up the Night

The event raises money to provide medical insurance for retired city firefighters and their families.

The 20th annual held Tuesday at the was no ordinary affair.

Featuring a silent and live auction, the evening also included a rousing performance of God Bless America by City Clerk Byron Pope, a speech by Mayor William Brien dressed in fireman gear and a stand-up routine by comedian Jay Leno.

"It's a fantastic night. This is coming to the aid of the retired firemen and their families, and supporting them after all the years that they've given support and aid—and protected—this city," Brien said. "We're saying thank you to those people who every day make this city the safest city in America."

Hosted by the Beverly Hills Firemen's Association, the event raises funds for the organization's Post-Retirement Medical Benefit Trust Fund. The fund provides medical insurance for city firefighters—and their families—after retirement.

"It's just unbelievable how gracious and giving this community is," Chief Timothy Scranton said. "We're so thankful for all the support everybody's given us for over 20 years."

Former BHFD Chief Bill Daley, who held the post from 1979 to 1993, noted that the community has always been a strong benefactor for the fire department.

"It's wonderful that we get such great support from the community. We always have," he said. "I was fire chief of Beverly Hills for 14 years...and we've always had great support."

Honorees at the ball included Firefighter of the Year Glenn Pinson, and Harvey Adair-Art Davis Memorial Meritorious Service Award recipients Shane Sennett and Dean Viana.

"It is so exciting to be here tonight. I have come here at least for the last 10 years," Councilwoman Lili Bosse said. "We have, by far, the best fire department. You see the buzz in this room. When you come to a night like this, you just can't help but get swept away by the excitement and the support and the community feel that we have here."

But even with many city firefighters at the event, the BHFD's commitment to protecting Beverly Hills was always present. Firefighter Ryan Pearson attended the ball in a suit, but had a walkie-talkie on his belt in case of an emergency.

"I'm on duty," he said. "If we get a call in the city, I have to go."

Councilman Barry Brucker said it was a "wonderful evening" and that it felt great to be able to show thanks to city firefighters for all they do.

"We have a city that loves its fire department, and a fire department that loves and takes care of our city," he said. "We couldn't be more proud."
