Week in Review: Vegetarian Chili, Pick-Up Basketball and Ecstasy Busts

This week also brought another community Metro meeting.

It's time for the weekly roundup of what took place in Beverly Hills from Aug. 1-7.

SUNDAY

The week began with our Rescue Dog of the Week post. We met Watson, a 3-year-old mix who was rescued from Hurricane Katrina and landed in Beverly Hills.

Next came the site's first "This Day in Beverly Hills History" post. We began this series with a factoid about the establishment of the city's police department, which was founded 83 years ago.

MONDAY

The day kicked off with coverage of this year's annual Chili Cookoff at the farmers' market. Tanu Gupta's vegetarian entry beat out seven meaty varieties to take the top prize.

Then came a video highlighting a close-knit group of residents enjoy pick-up basketball games Roxbury Park.

Columnist David De Bacco brought us his weekly Fresh from the Farmers' Market piece, giving us tips on what fruits help put out the burn when you eat spicy foods.

TUESDAY

Tuesday began with a Standout Student feature with Carly Stone, and incoming BHHS junior who is busy working at the Beverly Hills Farmers' Market and running her own cooking class this summer.

Next up was a post about the cancellation of a Republican National Committee event at the Beverly Wilshire hotel that was featuring controversial conservative blogger Andrew Breibart.

Last up for the day was the winning recipe from the 2010 Chili Cookoff. Tanu Gupta was kind enough to share her prize-winning vegetarian version with Patch.

WEDNESDAY

Midweek began with a video about the Cheese Store of Beverly Hills. Located on North Beverly Drive, this shop has more than 500 cheeses to choose from.

After that was coverage of the City Council meeting, where members of council grilled Southern California Edison on the reliability of its service.

The day ended with our latest Green Files column by Ellen Lutwak, who filled us in on .

THURSDAY

Thursday started with a piece on the latest Metro community meeting. This time City Council was on hand to hear residents' concerns.

Next Patch took a hike up Coldwater Canyon Park to catch up with residents and hear what they think about the overturning of Proposition 8, which had banned same-sex marriage in the state.

Then came breaking news about a Beverly Hills couple who was shot to death in their car in South Los Angeles.

After that was a story about how more than $62 million in Beverly Hills bonds sold out in less than an hour.

FRIDAY

The day began with a brief about .

Next was a post about how the BHPD teamed up with the DEA to bring down a local Ecstasy ring.

The workweek ended with a video showing what City Council had to say at the latest Metro community meeting.

SATURDAY

The weekend started off with a Q&A with Beverly Hills Athletic Alumni Association President David Corwin.

After that was a Resident Spotlight featuring educational consultant Anne Garber.

The week ended with a post from Native Son 90210 columnist Daniel Shofet, who discussed what local teens think about the overturning of Proposition 8.
