Week in Review: 9/11 Remembered, Amplified Sound Cutoff Time and School District Surplus

Also, four Board of Education candidates are gearing up to compete for three seats in the Nov. 8 election.

This past week, Beverly Hills remembered the victims of Sept. 11, 2001, while the community dealt with the loss of a Beverly Hills High School student who died suddenly on campus. Here are the top stories from Sept. 4-10. 1. Fire Chief Tim Scranton gave an early-morning speech Sunday at the Beverly Hills 9/11 Memorial Garden in honor of the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. 2. A memorial was held for Beverly Hills High School sophomore Elena Natanzadeh, who died on campus from unknown causes. 3. The City Council voted 4 to 1 at its last meeting to establish 10 p.m., seven days a week, as the cutoff time for amplified sound. BHHS Memorial to Be Created in Honor of Student Who Died on Campus

The BHUSD board plans to put a plaque near a tree or plant a sapling in memory of Elena Natanzadeh.

The Beverly Hills Unified School District Board of Education is planning to create a memorial on the campus of Beverly Hills High School in memory of Elena Natanzadeh, the 15-year old sophomore who died there Friday. Natanzadeh, who died of an undetermined medical ailment, was laid to rest Tuesday, BHUSD Board of Education President Lisa Korbatov said at the panel's meeting Tuesday night. BHUSD Superintendent Gary Woods, BHHS Principal Carter Paysinger, BHHS Assistant Principal Toni Staser and board member Myra Lurie attended the service. “All of us would have been there today but with such short notice we had things on our schedule we couldn’t move,” Korbatov said, noting that board members planned to visit the family to offer condolences…

BHHS Student Dies After Collapsing on Campus Friday

Hundreds of people attend a memorial service Sunday at the high school for Elena Natanzadeh.

A 15-year-old sophomore at Beverly Hills High School collapsed on campus Friday morning and died shortly afterward. Elena Natanzadeh, who graduated from Beverly Vista Middle School in 2010, died of an undetermined ailment. Administrators at the Beverly Hills Unified School District, under direction from the family, did not identify the student nor release any specific details of her death.
