BHHS Robotics Team Competes in LA County Competition

The group had six weeks to build a life-size robot that shoots basketballs.

The Beverly Hills High School Robotics team hopes to reach the finals for the second year in a row when it competes in the FIRST Robotics Los Angeles regional competition Friday and Saturday. The 75 members of the BHHS squad have been working seven days a week since mid-January on the competition’s challenge, which is to build a functioning, life-size robot that can shoot a basketball. The robots compete by making as many baskets as possible in 135 seconds. The Beverly Hills team, like the other 65 teams in the competition, received a sealed box containing the required parts of the robot. The group had just six weeks to finish the device and send it to Long Beach, Calif., where the competition is being held. “This is like sports for the …

BHHS Student Joins Press Pool for Obama's LAX Arrival

After a year of attempts to interview President Obama, a student reporter for KBEV 6 is invited to cover his Feb. 15 arrival at LAX.

A Beverly Hills High School student reporter was among a dozen media representatives who covered President Barack Obama’s Wednesday arrival at Los Angeles International Airport. Obama was in the area for a Holmby Hills fundraiser and stayed overnight at the Beverly Hilton. BHHS senior Max Schwartz, who hosts a political talk show for KBEV 6 student television, has been trying to interview Obama for a year. He called the White House press office at least monthly with interview requests and has repeatedly phoned since early this month when he learned the president was visiting Los Angeles. “I told them that KBEV is a real television station,” Schwartz said. “I was added to the White House [press] email blast after several requests.”  Through…

BHHS Football Season Ends on Sour Note

The Normans are routed 43-0 by Ocean League rival Culver City.

Before its final home game of the season, the Beverly Hills High varsity football team held its annual “Senior Recognition Night,” celebrating the senior players and their parents along with inducting the newest members into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. But as the game started, it became apparent that the Normans were no match for rival Culver City, which won 43-0 Thursday night at Nickoll Field to clinch third place in the Ocean League. Santa Monica will finish in first place with a victory over Hawthorne on Friday. Should the Vikings lose they would share the title with Inglewood. Culver City (7-3 overall, 3-2 in league) won the toss but elected to defer and kicked off to Beverly Hills (2-8, 1-4). In what seemed a foreshadowing of…

Normans' Offense Sputters Against Morningside

Playing without several key starters, the Beverly Hills High School football team loses 6-2.

Perhaps no football team in the Ocean League has been more decimated by injuries this season than Beverly Hills and it was evident Friday night against Morningside at Coleman Stadium in Inglewood. The Normans were down to their fourth- and fifth-stringers at certain positions and that, coupled with a lack of red zone production, led to their third consecutive defeat, 6-2, in a defensive struggle against a fired-up opponent determined to notch its first league win on homecoming. "The defense played well, but it's tough to win when you have so many guys out," Normans coach Donald Paysinger said. "Also, the field was in terrible shape because it rained earlier in the day and Inglewood played here [Thursday] night. Neither team could move the …
