California Bike Race Visits Beverly Hills May 20

The last day of the Amgen Tour of California will see participants pedaling through town.

Motorists should be braced for brief road closures, but bicycle racing fans will have an up-close look for three days next Friday, Saturday and Sunday when the Amgen Tour of California bike race winds through the mountains of Los Angeles County and finishes May 20 on the streets of Beverly Hills, Hollywood and downtown L.A. Next Sunday, some L.A. streets may be thronged with fans, but road closures will not be lengthy as the bike race passes any given spot relatively quickly, organizers said. Events at Sunday's finish line, at L.A. Live, are slated to wrap up by 1 p.m. Sunday's race will start on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, then wind down the Sunset Strip into Hollywood. The bike race will follow the L.A. LA Marathon Returning to Beverly Hills in 2013

Some residents voiced concerns that the event caused too many street closures in the community.

The Beverly Hills City Council agreed at Tuesday's study session to have the Los Angeles Marathon course again run through the city in 2013, despite opposition from some residents because of street closures caused by the race. Marathon organizers had sought to have the race go through the city for three additional years, but the council agreed only to review the impact following next year's race, Therese Kosterman, the city's public information manager, told City News Service. The 26-mile, 385-yard marathon course for 2013 enters Beverly Hills at the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Doheny Drive, continues south on Doheny to Burton Way, west when it becomes the south roadway of Santa Monica Boulevard, south on Rodeo Drive, west …

Dodgers Edge Pirates, 2-1, in Home Opener

Announcer Vin Scully and new owner and basketball legend Magic Johnson are absent as the Los Angeles Dodgers kick off a season-long celebration of the stadium's 50th anniversary.

Andre Ethier hit an eight-inning tie-breaking home run on his 30th birthday as the Los Angeles Dodgers began their season-long celebration of Dodger Stadium's 50th anniversary with a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates in their home opener today, exactly 50 years after their first game there. The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the first as leadoff hitter Dee Gordon singled, stole second, moved to third on Mark Ellis' ground out and scored on Matt Kemp's ground out. It was Kemp's ninth consecutive game with a run batted in, dating back to last season, setting a Los Angeles Dodger team record, breaking the mark he had shared with four other players, and tying the Dodger franchise record initially set by Augie Galan in 1944 and tied by Hall …
