The department operates through the teamwork of its five divisions: Administration, Fire Prevention, Fire Suppression, Emergency Medical Services and CPR/CERT.
Timothy J. Scranton was appointed as the city's fire chief in 2007. He had previously served as the assistant fire chief.
The BHFD is one of the few fire departments in the nation that is rated "Class 1" by the Insurance Services Office, meaning that the city has an exemplary fire protection and suppression track record. Less than one percent of some 45,000 municipalities receive a Class 1 ranking from the Insurance Services Office, an organization that analyzes the performance of fire departments across the United States.
