If Metro decides to route a subway under Beverly Hills High School, it will be faced with a lawsuit to prevent tunneling under the campus.
Geologists hired by the Beverly Hills Unified School District argued Thursday that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is using flawed studies to support a subway route that requires tunneling under Beverly Hills High School to reach Century City. The controversial route is part of the proposed Westside Subway Extension, an expansion of the Purple Line to Beverly Hills, Century City, Westwood and the Veterans Administration Medical Center. The allegations that Metro is relying on faulty data were made during a public hearing before Metro's Board of Directors. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who chairs the board, said the purpose of the hearing was to allow Beverly Hills the chance to present evidence and testimony regarding …

Gov. Jerry Brown's proposed budget revision could end up cutting billions in education funding.
With a plea to voters to accept tax hikes, Gov. Jerry Brown proposed steep cuts across a variety of programs Monday to close a nearly $16 billion state budget deficit. Public education from kindergarten though college could see billions in cuts, pending voter approval of tax hikes this November. The fiscal year starts July 1. "We're going to have to cut deeper," the Democratic governor said in Sacramento while releasing his annual budget revision. "I'm linking these serious budget reductions—real increased austerity—with a plea to the voters: Please increase taxes temporarily on the most affluent and everyone else with a quarter-of-a-cent sales tax." Brown said the state's budget deficit ballooned to $15.7 billion since January, when it …

Come to Horace Mann Wednesday to donate urgently-needed blood. Type O positive donors are particularly needed.
Horace Mann parents are rallying around one of their own and also helping to ease a shortage of donated blood at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Inspired by a critically-ill Horace Mann parent, the school is holding a blood drive in the auditorium from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 16. It is the first time in recent memory that any of the K-8 schools have held a blood drive. “We have a wonderful mother of two Horace Mann children who is in need of blood,” said middle school parent Cassia Geilim, the lead organizer of the drive. “This is sad and our community must be united.” The ill parent, who wishes to remain unidentified, needs Type O positive blood, so anyone with that blood type is urged to donate. Still, any donor is welcome …

The video was paid for by Beverly Hills' umbrella PTA organization as part of their fight against routing the Westside Subway Extension under the city's high school.
A Los Angeles Times article quotes an engineer featured in a Beverly Hills PTA Council YouTube video depicting flames engulfing the city's high school as "over the top." The video titled No Subway Under BHHS was posted in late April. It warns viewers of the possibility of methane gas explosions at Beverly Hills High School should the Metropolitan Transportation Authority tunnel under the campus, which sits on an oil field. The Times article quotes an engineer hired by the Beverly Hills Unified School District who is featured in the video: The PTA Council video has more than 6,000 views as of Monday. At the end of the video, viewers are asked to sign a petition to stop a subway from going under BHHS. The ability to leave comments about the …

The school board has approved about $56 million in Measure E money for the project.
Measure E-related construction is scheduled to start in late June at Horace Mann School, almost four years after voters passed the $334 million bond to fund renovations at all five city schools. The Board of Education has allocated about $56 million in Measure E money to renovate the school, including $3 million to modernize the auditorium. Work on the auditorium is scheduled to begin soon after the academic year ends June 22, according to Principal Steven Kessler. The school will be without an auditorium until at least February 2013. Additional renovations are slated to begin next spring or summer and will take at least two years to complete. Horace Mann staff and administrators have been meeting with the project architect overseeing the …

Martin Powers, currently the principal of Brookside Upper School in Marin County, will replace Irene Stern starting July 1. Powers is expected to visit the campus Friday to meet students and faculty for the first time since the board voted unanimously last week to hire him. “Dr. Powers is a principal with a skill set that closely aligns with the top three characteristics identified in the BV principal survey conducted a few months ago," Superintendent Gary Woods said in a statement.
