In a post titled "Jimbo and Me—In Search of the Elusive Professor Dolan" on CityWatch, Mirisch calls on Metro to be more forthcoming with its scientific data.
The following post first appeared on the website CityWatch and is being republished with permission from the author. WHAT’S METRO HIDING? - James Francis Dolan, PhD. Professor of Earth Sciences at USC’s Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. The guy may be tone-deaf, for all I know, but he is literally one of the region’s true geology rock stars. The go-to guy when it comes to faults, tectonics and all that jazz. I have no idea if his friends call him “Jim” or “Jimmy” or “J. F.” Somehow with all his contagious enthusiasm and dry sense of humor, I imagine that he’s a Jimbo, but it’s just a hunch. Jimbo Dolan, USC rock star. His rock star qualities became apparent at Metro’s Oct. 19 presentation when, as a member of a panel paid …

Come to Horace Mann Wednesday to donate urgently-needed blood. Type O positive donors are particularly needed.
Horace Mann parents are rallying around one of their own and also helping to ease a shortage of donated blood at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Inspired by a critically-ill Horace Mann parent, the school is holding a blood drive in the auditorium from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 16. It is the first time in recent memory that any of the K-8 schools have held a blood drive. “We have a wonderful mother of two Horace Mann children who is in need of blood,” said middle school parent Cassia Geilim, the lead organizer of the drive. “This is sad and our community must be united.” The ill parent, who wishes to remain unidentified, needs Type O positive blood, so anyone with that blood type is urged to donate. Still, any donor is welcome …

Learn about the origins of Mother's Day and how you can celebrate the holiday by helping others.
The first American Mother's Day was in 1870, created by suffragist and abolitionist Julia Ward Howe. Howe is most remembered for writing The Battle Hymn of the Republic, but after witnessing the continuing horrors of the Civil War, she called on women to work towards peace: With no political power, and very little sway in commerce, Howe hoped to use women's role as mothers—considered at the time the moral center of the family and the nation—to put an end to killing of their husbands and sons. Mother's Day became a nationally recognized holiday through the work of Anna Marie Jarvis. Her mother, Ann Jarvis, had also called for mothers to come together during the Civil War. She spent her life providing nursing and sanitation care to people …

I care about the future of Beverly Hills. That means our children and the fact that they are in harm's way because a tunnel under Beverly Hills High School puts them in real danger. The facts are that a methane gas explosion is a very real danger. History proves that. There are documented cases …

April 19 marks Holocaust Remembrance Day. As we remember those who perished, the president of Jewish World Watch notes that despite the adage “Never Again,” there have been 46 genocides since the Holocaust.
A few years ago, my father-in-law, David, stood on a corner in the small Ukrainian village of Tuchin and pointed to the spot where he last saw his mother, Chaya, his sister, Rachel, and her three small children in November 1941. The Nazis had invaded the Ukraine in June and by November it was clear that they were advancing on Tuchin. Chaya sent David off by foot to outrun the Nazis; as bad luck would have it, her daughters' children were suffering from the measles and had high fevers. The plan was for Chaya, Rachel and the children to join David on the eastward trek a few days later. Chaya waved goodbye to David, knowing that they would only be separated for a few days. Within hours of David's departure, the Nazis invaded. David's family…

Commentary submitted by Beverly Hills resident Tina Yaghoubi, a BHHS alumna and senior at UCLA studying political science. “How can you support the subway?” yelled one woman at the last Beverly Hills Metro meeting, “Don’t fix what’s not broken!” said another. Of all the heated rhetoric, it’s surprising to hear arguments attacking the subway project in its entirety when we’re home to some of the worst traffic…

George Vreeland Hill writes that Metro's plans for the Westside Subway Extension would not only adversely affect BHHS, but many Beverly Hills businesses as well.

Write to the site editor at mariec@patch.com. Commentary submitted by Beverly Hills resident George Vreeland Hill. Metro seems to have caused a divide between the citizens of Beverly Hills and those outside the city in regards to a subway plan that would run under Beverly Hills High School and the city. Some people have accused us (the people of Beverly Hills) of being greedy, self-centered and selfish for not wanting a subway that would help others. We and …

Mayor Barry Brucker writes that the newspaper inaccurately claims Councilman John Mirisch was unfairly passed over for a commission post.

Thank you Laurie, for your message, to those who will be able to donate blood to help save lives, and for those who wish to donate, but can't, for a reason. We truly appreciate your help; donating the gift of life is so very special. The interesting fact is that we have only one gentleman - Larry Wiener, our District Attorney in Beverly Hills - who had signed so far, to donate blood ! Anyone have…   more ›
