Prep Football Preview: BHHS to Take on San Marcos

The Normans (1-0) will face the Royals (0-2) in Santa Barbara on Thursday.

On Thursday the Norman football squad is heading north to Santa Barbara to face the San Marcos Royals in a non-league matchup.

"We have to eliminate the penalties if we want to be successful," head coach Donald Paysinger told Patch about the upcoming game. "We need to play hard every play. Our defense has to be able to stop them on third down without taking a personal foul penalty."

Despite 10 penalties and several other miscues, Beverly Hills defeated the Santa Barbara Dons 29-7 on Sept. 10 in the season opener at Nickoll Field. The Normans committed four personal foul penalties against the Dons.

San Marcos High School (0-2) was shut out 17-0 by Rio Mesa on Sept. 10. Quarterback Joe Rivera completed seven passes on 22 attempts for 81 yards and an interception before leaving the game with an injury in the fourth quarter. Mo Cruz pounded away for 42 yards on 14 carries.

Although they had a scoreless second game, Paysinger said the Royals have a "pretty good team," especially with Rivera and Cruz leading the offense.
