Lady Normans Pour It On

The BHHS girls basketball team finds its shooting stroke in road win over Morningside.

The Beverly Hills High girls basketball team broke out offensively in a 64-43 road win over Morningside on Wednesday.

The Normans (13-12 overall, 4-3 in the Ocean League) were led by senior point guard Natalie Moy, who finished with 24 points and several assists leading to easy baskets by her teammates. Moy had 12 of the Normans’ 14 first quarter points as she was able to find space when her defender sagged to check Chelsea Austin.

“I just think that she’s gaining confidence,” Normans coach John Braddell said.  “It’s always been there, I think she’s always been able to shoot, I think she’s been apprehensive as far as when to shoot, and now with all our injuries, she’s been forced into that role.”

The Monarchs (7-14, 1-6) had to deal with Austin and Tiffany Haney as well as Moy. Austin had 21 points and Haney finished with 17 as the Normans put together their second-highest offensive output of the season.

“We had a breakout performance,” Braddell said. “Natalie just played great in the first half… shot the ball extremely well. Tiffany attacked the glass, got out in the break, converted, did a great job. And we got the ball down to Chelsea in the post, and she did a good job.”

Several Monarchs players had nice scoring games, but had to work hard for it.  Leading scorer Deandrea Toler had 20 points, Krishawna Barker had 18 and two others had 17 points. However, it was hard to keep up with the production the Normans were getting on the offensive end of the floor.

“Defensively we executed our game plan and tried to keep [Toler] out of the lane as much as possible.," Braddell said. "She had 20, but it was 20 with a lot of shots, and she really had to work for all those that she got, so I thought we did a good job.”

The Normans built a 12-2 run coming out of halftime as they held the Monarchs to just one basket until the 2:16 mark. Transition offense contributed to much of the total, as Morningside crashed the boards and left the Normans backcourt free to get a head start to the other end.

From the 5:47 mark in the fourth quarter on, Beverly Hills outscored the Monarchs 10-3.
