Horace Mann Boys and Girls Soccer Teams Claim District Soccer Titles

The middle school sports program is so popular that all tryouts are completely filled.

In its second year, the Beverly Hills Unified District-run after school competitive sports program allows boys and girls in all four middle schools (Beverly Vista, El Rodeo, Horace Mann, Hawthorne) to compete against one-another in soccer, basketball, volleyball and football.

On Oct. 30, the Horace Mann School Huskies won the championship for both the boys and the girls soccer teams, defeating Beverly Vista in a 5-1 victory.

More than 300 kids participated in 2012 in the middle school sports program, with a similar number expected for the 2013-14 school year. The program is so popular that tryouts for every sport are completely filled.

The program is lead by Commissioner Steve Kessler, aka "coach." He's also the principal at Horace Mann and a coach, teacher and administrator in the Beverly Hills Unified School District for the past 38 years.

In additional to Kessler’s volunteerism to lead the program, district aides, teachers and classified staff also volunteer as coaches on the sports teams, and BHHS students volunteer act as officials at the games, for community service points.

In collaboration with Beverly Hills Parks and Recreation and local sports programs, such as AYSO and the Beverly Hills Basketball League, this program is a huge success.

Upcoming sports programs:

  • Nov. 7 through Dec. 11 - Basketball (boys and girls teams)
  • Jan. 6 through Feb. 15 - Football (co-ed teams) and Volleyball (boys and girls teams)

Congratulations to the Horace Mann Huskies, both the Boys and Girls Soccer teams!
