Norman Football Routs San Marcos 36-0

Frank Brown scores three touchdowns in road victory.

Beverly Hills High School running back Frank Brown ran for 141 yards and three touchdowns on Friday as the Normans defeated the San Marcos Royals 36-0 in Santa Barbara.

"Once we settled down on offense the running game started to open up the passing game," Normans coach Donald Paysinger said.

BHHS utilized a two-pronged running attack of Brown and Jordan Alleyne, who racked up 81 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. This allowed quarterback Josh Newman to test San Marcos' man-to-man coverage, throwing for 136 yards on 12 of 22 attempts and a touchdown to wide receiver Henry Evans.

Both offenses sputtered until momentum shifted to the Normans' favor midway through the second quarter. Beverly advanced the ball to just outside the red zone, where it faced a fourth-and-four. Newman fumbled the snap, but corralled it quickly enough to hand it off to Brown, who completed a 23-yard touchdown run. San Marcos head coach Jeff Hesselmeyer called it a "back-breaker."

"It was pretty demoralizing," he said. "A lot of kids did try to compete, but it was a little deflating when we tried to make some big plays on defense and one got away."

The Normans never looked back. The team ended the first half on a 69-yard drive that was capped off by a 3-yard touchdown run by Brown. After another Brown touchdown in the third quarter, Alleyne added a 44-yard scoring run of his own to end the quarter at 29-0.

The BHHS defense gave up an impressive 84 total yards, five first downs and two interceptions. Pressure on the San Marcos wide receivers and caused 11 incomplete passes and halted the Royals' slant-heavy routes. Paysinger said his defense stepped up when it needed to, despite five injured defensive starters.

"I just wanted my guys to make plays," he said. "Our defense made plays for us"

Beverly Hills is now 2-0 while San Marcos fell to 0-3 after its third consecutive home loss. The Normans will play at Alexander Hamilton High School next Friday.
