BHHS Players Named to All-CIF Teams

Normans are honored in girls basketball and boys and girls soccer.

The California Interscholastic Federation has announced its All-Southern Section teams for winter and three Beverly Hills High School players have been selected in their respective sports.

In girls basketball, 6-foot senior power forward Chelsea Austin made the Division 2A team after scoring 445 points and averaging 14.8 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 3.1 blocks and 2.8 steals per game. The Cal State Fullerton signee scored 24 points in two games this season: a 68-57 loss to Gardena Serra on Dec. 2 and a 45-41 victory over Inglewood Morningside on Jan. 14. She scored 15 or more points 17 times.

"Chelsea has been a big part of our offense," Coach John Braddell said after Beverly Hills' wildcard playoff victory over El Monte Arroyo, in which Austin scored 15 of her team's 36 points. "She can dominate in the paint."

In boys soccer, senior midfielder-striker Mariano Gonzalez made the All-CIF team for Division IV after netting 11 goals and adding seven assists and 72 steals for the Normans, who beat City of Industry Workman on penalty kicks in a wildcard playoff game before losing 4-0 to Artesia in the first round.

"Mariano was by nature more of a distributor than a shooter last year," Normans Coach Steve Rappaport said. "He's taken more of the scoring role this season and has done a better job of finishing."

In girls soccer, senior defender-midfielder Nicole Star made the All-CIF team in Division IV after leading Beverly Hills to a in the Ocean League and into the second round of the playoffs. She tallied 12 goals with 23 assists for 47 points and was one of the captains on a squad that allowed just 22 goals in 26 games. 

"Nicole has a tremendous cross and a blast," Beverly Hills Coach Ryan Franks said. "She really improved her game this year."
