BHHS Girls Soccer Loses Playoffs Shootout

La Reina beats the Normans on penalty kicks in the second round.

Having already won its since coach Ryan Franks took over the team in 2003-04, girls soccer had a chance to reach another milestone this week—securing a spot in the quarterfinal round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

After blanking Los Angeles Baptist 2-0 in the opening round last Friday on goals by Dina Pourbaba and Ashley Aviram, the Normans traveled to Ventura County Wednesday to take on La Reina in a Division 4 second round matchup at Cal Lutheran University.

Beverly Hills (14-7-3) struck first on Tylor Fields' goal in the 31st minute and only several acrobatic saves by La Reina goalkeeper Roxanne Myers kept the Regents close. Fields, the team's second-leading scorer with 13 goals, almost tallied again at the end of the first half, but her shot trickled off the post.

La Reina (11-8-3) tied the game 1-1 on Gillian Myers' header off a corner kick from Meghan Ray in the 61st minute. The match stayed deadlocked through two 10-minute overtime periods, setting up a penalty kick shootout.

Top scorer Ashley Aviram (25 goals and 16 assists) converted the first attempt to give the Normans a short-lived lead, but Whitney Gould answered back for the Regents. Kaela Reisfelt, who has 10 goals for BHHS this season, hit the post on her attempt and Ray scored to put La Reina ahead 2-1. Myers saved the next two shots by Elena Rust and Tiffany Moore. Rebecca Koval made the clinching kick for La Reina.

The loss was eerily similar to the Normans' 1-0 second-round defeat to South Torrance last year. Still, it was a season to remember for BHHS girls soccer. Behind goalkeeper Ida Trevino and defenders Rust, Arielle Harris and Monica Salandra, the Normans posted eight shutouts. Aviram, a junior, needs just six goals next season to break the school's career record of 55 goals set by Emily Litvak.

BOYS SOCCER

Beverly Hills opened the Division 4 playoffs Feb. 16 at Nickoll Field against Baldwin Park Sierra Vista and lost 2-1 in overtime. Steve Rappaport's team ended the season at 12-6-7 and finished second in the Ocean League.
