Beverly Hills Athletes Head to Playoffs

BHHS boys and girls basketball and soccer teams are playing in the post-season.

There are pros and cons to playing in a strong league. The downside is that it's more difficult to win. The upside is that teams with tougher schedules are usually rewarded come playoff time.

Such was the case for the Beverly Hills High boys and girls basketball teams, both of which earned at-large berths into the post season despite finishing in the bottom half of the six-school Ocean League.

The boys team finished 13-13 overall and fifth in the league with a 3-7 record, yet still earned the No. 14 seed in the 32-team Division 3A bracket. The Normans must travel to unseeded Rancho Alamitos of Garden Grove in the first round because the Vaqueros finished second in the Garden Grove League, higher than Beverly Hills' fifth spot in the Ocean League.

The game tips off at 7 p.m. Wednesday. If the Normans prevail they will likely face seed No. 2 Encino Crespi in the second round Friday.

The girls basketball team also made the playoffs and was awarded the No. 10 seed in Division 2A after finishing fourth in the Ocean League. The lady Normans will take on unseeded Arroyo of El Monte in the first round Thursday at 7 p.m. The Knights (13-13) get to host the game by virtue of their second-place finish in the Mission Valley League.

Despite finishing fourth in the Ocean League, the boys soccer team (11-11-2) travels to Workman in the City of Industry for a wild card game at 3 p.m. Wednesday. The winner plays at Artesia of Lakewood in the first round Friday at 3 p.m.

After a heartbreaking  in its regular season finale last Thursday—a defeat that cost Beverly Hills first place in the Ocean League—the Normans girls soccer team (16-6-2) sets about making that a memory when it hosts Maranatha on Thursday at 3 p.m. If victorious, Beverly Hills would face either Bloomington or South Torrance in the second round Feb. 22.
