Three Candidates File for Board of Education Race

Incumbent Brian Goldberg and two other residents file to compete for three seats in the November election.

Three candidates filed papers Monday—the first day of the filing period—to run for three Beverly Hills Unified School District Board of Education seats in the Nov. 8 election.

Current board Vice President Brian Goldberg is the only incumbent who filed to run for re-election. Damien Bean, a 15-year resident and current member of the BHUSD Facilities Advisory Committee, and Andy Licht, a member of the Traffic and Parking Commission, also filed the necessary paperwork.

"I hope to continue my important work for the community," Goldberg told Patch. He has three children at Horace Mann School.

Bean, who has a daughter at Beverly Hills High School and another daughter at El Rodeo School, told Patch that one of his campaign themes will be "It's about the middle," referring to the fact that the BHUSD needs to devote more resources to assist average students. Such efforts should help raise the district's standardized test scores, he said.

Bean plans to unveil more campaign themes in the coming weeks. In the meantime, residents can read more about Bean on his campaign website.

Licht could not be immediately reached for comment.

All three candidates filed their paperwork with the Los Angeles County Registrar's office in Downey. The filing period will remain open until Aug. 12.

Current Board of Education members Myra Lurie and Steven Fenton have indicated that they do not intend to run for re-election. Lurie, however, is under pressure from supporters to run again, so there is a chance she will be on the ballot.

Other residents being encouraged to run for board seats include Chairman and El Rodeo parent Jonathan Prince and former PTA Council President , a Horace Mann parent.

"I am hopeful that we will have an election in November, which is important for democracy," Goldberg said, alluding to the fact that there are so far only three candidates for the three open seats.
