Standout Student: Michael Maltzman

Michael Maltzman is volunteering at a camp for underprivileged youth.

Some of Beverly's finest are skipping summertime at the beach for a lesson in the classroom. Others are participating in community service programs or internships. Patch caught up with these standout Normans to talk about their plans. We'll be featuring new students throughout the summer months.

Incoming senior Michael Maltzman, 17, is headed to Camp Harmony, located in the Malibu Hills, for the fourth time. Camp Harmony provides homeless and impoverished children a free, overnight camping experience to give them a break from their day-to-day hardships.

"The most enjoyable part of Camp Harmony for me is watching all the children get off the bus," Maltzman said. "They greet all of us volunteers with huge smiles and show so much excitement that it makes all of us feel unbelievable to be a part of such an amazing organization."

Michael and his sisters were introduced to Camp Harmony by their cousins four years ago. The Maltzman siblings have been volunteering there ever since.

"By the end of the weekend, every volunteer feels like they have made an impact on the lives of all the children, which makes the entire experience that much more satisfying," Maltzman said.
