Standout Student: Emily Grubman

Emily Grubman is volunteering at a camp for youth with life-threatening illnesses.

Some of Beverly's finest are skipping summertime at the beach for a lesson in the classroom. Others are participating in community service programs or internships. Patch caught up with these standout Normans to talk about their plans. We'll be featuring new students throughout the summer months.

Incoming junior Emily Grubman, 16, will be a counselor at Dream Street, a non-profit summer camp program for children and young adults with life threatening and chronic illnesses. Grubman's parents founded Dream Street in 1988.

"I'm part of Dream Street because I have always been interested in its cause. I grew up going to Dream Street every summer with my dad," Grubman said. "Now that I'm finally old enough to become a counselor, I stay in one of the girls' cabins the entire week."

Dream Street is free of charge for its campers. There are programs in five states serving some 700 kids a year. A medical staff is on hand 24/7 at all locations so that participants can enjoy activities that would normally be restricted due to their illnesses.

"I'm looking forward to seeing how happy the kids are at the camp and just being there to help them have an amazing time," Grubman said.
