Patch Profile: BHUSD Board Candidate Brian Goldberg

The current board vice president is the only incumbent running in the Nov. 8 school board election.

At a time of dissatisfaction with local and national government, Board of Education Vice President sees his incumbency as an advantage.

“I am the only candidate running with proven experience, leadership and the courage needed to continue pushing our district forward,” said Goldberg, one of four candidates running for three Beverly Hills Unified School District school board seats on Nov. 8. His opponents are El Rodeo parent , educator and producer and Beverly Vista parent , who is running as a write-in candidate.

Goldberg consistently touts his record in his ads and at public forums. Specifically, he points to being an early and vocal opponent of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s proposed plan to  Beverly Hills High School as part of the Westside Subway Extension, as well as being the only board member to vote against awarding management of the bond to ’s firm, Strategic Concepts. (Christiansen is scheduled to go on trial next month on four felony counts of conflict of interest related to her management of the Measure E bond.)

The candidate also highlights his efforts to transition BHUSD to , which generates more funding for the schools. Under basic aid, which BHUSD became in 2010, the district receives its funding from local property taxes rather than on a per-pupil allotment from the state. Being a basic aid district may have helped the board lure to become the BHUSD’s new superintendent; Woods left the state’s top performing district—the San Marino Unified School District—to join BHUSD.

The father of three Horace Mann students, Goldberg has been a strong voice for maintaining small classrooms. Earlier this year he successfully encouraged a board majority to vote against a new teacher contract that could have led to larger class sizes at the K-3 level. He also led efforts to end the BHUSD‘s money-losing .

“I have taken stands that are not always popular, but they reflect my commitment to what is right for our children, parents, teachers and residents,” he said.

Still, Goldberg has racked up an impressive list of endorsers. They include City Council members John Mirisch and Lili Bosse; Planning Commissioners Noah Furie and Brian Rosenstein; Human Relations Commissioner Sharona Nazarian; former mayors Nancy Krasne and Les Bronte; and former planning commissioner Kathy Reims.

For his second term, Goldberg is running on what he describes as a “four point plan for the next four years.” The plan, which is explained in detail on his campaign website and includes balanced fiscal policies, a districtwide master facilities plan, curriculum for the 21st century, and integrating technology into every subject and each class.

For more information about Goldberg, visit his campaign website. Voters are also invited to attend his last candidate coffee at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 321 S. Bedford Drive. To RSVP, email Julie Gilberg.

Thanks for a great profile. Democracy only works if we the people participate. Remember to vote this Tuesday, November 8th. Polls open at 7 am and close at 8 pm. Thank you.
Miss BH November 02, 2011 at 08:16 PM
Since I’m a voter maybe Ill come to Brian’s coffee with copies of Brian being found guilty, not once but twice this year of fraud and altering documents. Wake up! Beverly Hill's its not a secret.
dragoncraze November 02, 2011 at 10:25 PM
You are welcome to attend Brian Goldberg's coffee tomorrow and certainly all are welcome. Please be sure to bring your documentation regarding a Civil Lawsuit from 2004. Not only is this old news and not relevant to his record on the school board but your are factually inaccurate. What is relevant is your motivation for misrepresenting facts. As you know Brian was the only Board member to vote NO on Karen's contract with the district and Brian pushed hard for the DA to investigate and bring criminal charges against Karen and former Supt. Hubbard for their criminal activities.
Disembodied Voice November 02, 2011 at 11:08 PM
Also not a secret: your unfortunate grammar and the following two articles... 1) http://bhcourier.com/article.cfm?articleID=65594 2) http://bhcourier.com/article/More_Local_News/More_Local_News/Battle_In_BHHS_Salter_Theatre_Brings_Police/65601 "Truth is generally the best vindication against slander." -Abraham Lincoln Miss BH, I am curious as to whether your last name is 'Lurie' and/or the possibility that you may have a child attending a BH school on an out-of-district permit. (note: I am not a Goldberg partisan, just a stickler for veracity. If you deign to reply, please do not reach for the low-hanging fruit and assume I have a politically-motivated agenda. I simply like accuracy and airing the facts when it strikes me as though someone may be obscuring them.)
Miss BH November 03, 2011 at 07:19 PM
1st Yes my spelling and grammer is bad but if you think my name is "Lurie" your the dumb one. How far do you think she would get with my spelling. 2nd Brians Integrity has nothing to do with Karen Christians case. Look at his own case where he was before the judge. He can say whatever he wants in front of the board, who cares?. 3rd What is relevent to my motivation is the truth... its embarrassing that Brian wears his little pen that says INTEGRITY when he’s legally been proven to lie and cheat with no regard to the people in his path. This has nothing to do with a strategic concepts case in witch nothing has been proven and most of wich has already been thrown out. 4th if Brian pushed hard for the DA then you can also thank him for costing the school district millions of dollars in legal fees. Yes thank him for spending the money that was meant to keep our children safe, and a safe place for our community to go incase of an emergency. Im pretty sure we didnt vote for Brains results, did you?.
Jillian Neal November 03, 2011 at 08:35 PM
I have nothing to gain from this, as after winning my LACOE appeal I happily decide to leave the Beverly Hills schools and the drama and absurdity that goes with it. Here is a link to all of Brian's legal Documents...... http://www.yousendit.com/download/T2dmRkJaMHcxUUR2bk1UQw What is incredible to me is that so many of the good people of Beverly Hills do not care that Brian Goldberg has absolutely NO INTEGRITY or ETHICS. The link includes his Superior Court Judgment for Malice, Oppression or Fraud. Also his phoney divorce document to avoid paying the judgement. There are many others as well. Including the court document that states "On appeal Brian does NOT DISPUTE the jury's finding that he committed fraud." It is shameful that someone with his blatant disregard for the law is a "trustee of our schools". One would hope that there would be a higher standard of ethics by this community. Perhaps Beverly Hills is a good place for Bernie Madoff to run for city Council!
Miss BH November 03, 2011 at 08:47 PM
Thank you, I couldn't say it better myself....no really...I tried but couldn't:)
mark j November 03, 2011 at 09:20 PM
You know what Jillian, many people are glad you left. Everyone is sick and tired of families trying to have to get their kids in the BHUSD school district on a permit while everyone else moves in for a purpose. People believe in joining a community to get what its’ community offers, and in this case, a better education. People realize that there are costs involved in order to achieve better standards and if that means paying higher property taxes and living in smaller houses, renting apartments – so be it. It shows class and honor. Why should I move in, spending money on redevelopment when someone else can wiggle their way with a permit just so that their child not go to a LAUSD district. It is totally outrageous. I also don't appreciate people using doctors and pyschologists as an excuse to get some type of medical note that says their child will be emotional disturbed if they need to move to a new school district. It's funny that when parents need to go to a new city or state they choose to leave because of a better job they do not even factor in the child’s well-being. But when a child is being forced out, the parents will cry and complain and go out of their way to claim that its unfair. “Oh my child will be emotionally disturbed, he will have any friends, he will be picked on that he does not go to BH anymore, yada yada yada..” It really is discusting.
mark j November 03, 2011 at 09:20 PM
Hey Jullian, why don't you tell everyone about your court case in BH a couple years ago, how about we pull some documents on you as well. Maybe we should have had the all squad come in on your case and make you look foolish too; almost happened too. You know, everyone has been sued one time or another and you don’t judge a book by its cover. The people of Beverly Hills care about Brian, thats why he has the full support of the community. Jillian, next time you want to do something, do it right, like move into a city to get all it offers, instead of trying to sneak your way in.
Jillian Neal November 03, 2011 at 09:27 PM
Agreed Mark. VERY glad to have left. The countless hours I spent raising 100's of thousands of dollars for your schools and the time I spent on the PTA and PTA council is so better spent on our incredible new school Paul Revere Charter and Magnet. Also now I can focus on working so I can afford my fabulous new extra LARGE house! Oh also my son is thriving both emotionally and academically!
Miss BH November 03, 2011 at 09:34 PM
Wow Mark, I guess the truth hurts. Everyone acused me of telling stories but Jullian gave you the proof. Sounds like shes more trustworthy then Brain and this is about Brian right?. BTW GOLDBERG DOSE NOT HAVE FULL SUPPORT OF THE COMMUNITY and it will at least show that on my ballot.
mark j November 03, 2011 at 09:37 PM
That did not seem to be the case when you were trying to stay in the school. That was your biggest concern, oh my son will be to disturbed to leave. 100's of thousands of dollars, go kid yourself. what a joke.
mark j November 03, 2011 at 09:40 PM
you might need to go back to school, because you continuously misspell and your grammar is horrible. Come to the coffee Miss BH, people would be happy to talk to you. bring the documents as well.
Jillian Neal November 03, 2011 at 09:44 PM
Hilarious Mark - you are so unbelievably uninformed on how the permit process worked. How we were invited to apply - how much time I spent as VP of the PTA to show my appreciation and actually went on PTA sponsored trips to brainstorm on bettering your schools. VERY SNEAKY OF ME! Oh and my small claims case had nothing to do with ethics. But you gotta love a community who stands behind Fraud and Malice! And my name is Jillian btw!!!
Miss BH November 03, 2011 at 10:02 PM
ewe ouch! Sure make fun Mark... just remeber I am a product of Beverly high. But I can still spot a lier.
John Stewart November 03, 2011 at 10:43 PM
I have read the documents you refer to and what I see is a Civil Case involving the sale of a family owned business in Big Bear Lake, CA Do you understand the difference between a Civil Case which has money damages as the basis for relief and a Criminal Case like the the one Karen Christensen and Jeff Hubbard are involved in? Nothing in the documents you reference prove that Dr.Goldberg altered any documents. This is a breach of contract case, nothing more and nothing less. Give it a rest
Mr. 90210 November 03, 2011 at 11:07 PM
I find Ms. Neal's post like the pot calling the kettle black. Here is a parent who went to such long lenghts as to go before the LACOE board and claim that her child's bed wetting problem was the result of psychological troubles, even had a therapist work and coach her on what to say, than moves her child anyway, just to prove a point? Ms. Neal your case and the Goldberg case are the same, both are civil case dealing with breach of contract, both have as a remedy money damages and both deal with a dispute between individuals, unlike the Madoff situation which is a Criminal Case, no crime was committee but your attempt to link the two cases just demonstrates to the readers of patch the depth to which you will go for a personal vendeta. You choose your large car and new house over staying in BHUSD, move on with your life, you state how happy you and your family are yet you continue to use Beverly Hills AYSO and come to BH for tricker treating even though you do not live, work or go to our schools. For me it is very simple, once a user always a user.
Mr. 90210 November 03, 2011 at 11:11 PM
I am so happy for you and your family yet you seem not to be able to move on. Why not leave BH AYSO, and BHBL and BH Baseball? Do you know the differnece between a Civil Law Suite and a Criminal Law Suite? This is old news yet you try to pretend it is something new. You mistate what the jury found and what the appeals court found, facts just seem to get in the way for you. We wish you well, move on with your life, if not for the BH community do it for your son.
Mr. 90210 November 03, 2011 at 11:14 PM
You have been exposed as the mouth piece for Karen and a former employee of Karen's a person who stole from our schools and is now on trial for Criminal Felony counts and you want to attack the only board member who had the courage to stand up and say no to her how sad if you truly are a graduate of Beverly and a resident of Beverly Hills that you would put your own personal gain ahead of a community that provided so much for you. Shame on you
Miss BH November 03, 2011 at 11:27 PM
Jillian Neal November 03, 2011 at 11:59 PM
Oh Brian AKA Mr. 90210. You are such a pathetic excuse for a human being. The depths of your attacks against a child are so in character for you. FYI There is no confusion of your fraud and malice and legal judgements which you lost ALL OF! FOUR (4) JUDGEMENTS in SUPERIOR COURT, no small claim court disputes here. Mine was settled btw Judgements against Brian Goldberg from the Superior Court (not small claims court) 1. July 7, 2009- Case # BBC00838- Regardless representations without regard for the truth, Acting with MALICE, DECEIT or FRAUD. Goldberg appealed and LOST- Judgement against him $ 516,876.00 + $59,996.00 2. March 21, 2008- Case # 08C01453 Judgement against Goldberg $ 20,647.00 3. September 24, 2008- Case # 08C04790- Goldberg settled for an undisclosed sum 4. December 10, 2008- Case 08C06007- Settled for undosclosed sum
Jillian Neal November 04, 2011 at 12:12 AM
Oh and Brian, obviously it's you as I never mentioned my big car but I certainly saw you notice it when I drove by you Mr 90120. Why am I the only one on this board with the guts to actually say my name??????
Mr. 90210 November 04, 2011 at 12:13 AM
Once again you show your true nature by attacking the poster and resorting to name calling. Your LACOE Appeal is a matter of public record as are the letters submitted by you to support your false claims against the district. How telling it is that when people expose your dirty laundry that you resort to name calling. The best compliment I could receive is being called Brian, thank you! I see you have been really busy looking into civil cases, again no different from your cases, all civil and all for money damages but you can keep spinning the facts all day long it does not change your motivation or the truth about who and what you are. A disgrunteled former permit parent who chose her own personal comfort over the best interest of her child. You have to live with that, grow up and move on with your life.
Mr. 90210 November 04, 2011 at 12:23 AM
Funny you think all these people liked you but you were just a bully when you were at HM, I see your new BMW everytime you bring your son to soccer games in BH, you are so loud nobody can miss you! For somebody who has moved on and is happy you spend a lot of time researching the Board member who finally ended the opportunity permit program and reading Beverly Hills Patch. Move on, we all have...
Miss BH November 04, 2011 at 12:27 AM
Brian 90210 your the one exposed. Dont pretend like you know me. Lets just see what happens. @ Jillian your awesome
DoughBoy November 04, 2011 at 12:31 AM
This comment chain is sad. Ms. Neal and her son probably may learn a universal truth: things change. As a resident of BH, I recall that Goldberg laid out rational reasons for examing the permit program: it was being misused, as can happen over time, and the district's funding status was about to change (that word!) to basic aid. He proposed natural breaking points and encouraged dialog, but was met with personal attacks and a media campaign to disparage him and BH. Some permit families were indeed supportive of our schools, and we can never doubt their concern for their children, but they failed to recognize that things change, so they tried like heck to keep it the same. It's great that Ms. Neal's son is doing well - because the follow-on to change is that it often can be a good thing, better than we could have imagined when fighting it! To his credit, Goldberg saw the permit plan through and we're on a better fiscal footing now. All that said, he probaly needs to be careful touting traits such as Integrity when there are black marks on his personal record (not that it's my business or I care, but if you tout a trait I have the right to examine it now). I'm comfortable with Effective and Dedicated, for example, which seem to better connect to the tasks at hand for School Board anyway. After Bill Clinton and the dude that followed him, people are more concerned about results than annointing our officials as some form of saints.
Jillian Neal November 04, 2011 at 03:01 AM
Doughboy - ah - a voice of reason. Many permit family's agreed that with basic aid permits should be phased out humanely. Not like the Witchhunt that was led by bitter angry people who over paid for their now devalued houses. We only exposed a vicious man who was judged to have "RECKLESS REPRESENTATIONS WITHOUT THE REGARD FROM THE TRUTH, ACTING WITH MALICE, DECEIT OR FRAUD." We may not expect our elected officials to be saints but we someone with this lack of scruples should not be on a school board. And Doughboy - with such a voice of reason.... why can't you use your name?
Jillian Neal November 04, 2011 at 03:13 AM
@Brian/Mr. 90210 I would like to state that there would be no reason for us to leave BHAYSO (My son hasn't played baseball for years but why would I expect you to have any facts) Most of the good people of AYSO supported the permit families. Oh at least 2 of the teams in BU14 have less than half BH residents so they are as happy to have us as we are to be there. And anyone who felt bullied by me must be the guilt ridden people who refused to donate money. YES during my tenure as fundraising VP I raised 100's of thousands of dollars in the fund drive! But alas Brian, I really do need to thank you as my son is thriving - and his school is unbelievably well run. It is a joy to be a part of and as amusing as it has been today to return to the toxicity and listen to you squirm I am done. You are only amusing in VERY SMALL DOSES!
Greg November 04, 2011 at 10:48 PM
Brian Goldberg has my vote. My only vote. I agree with DoughBoy that Goldberg is effective and dedicated. On second thought, I may also vote for Andy Licht, even though he has pulled out. I'm not keen on Lewis Hall, a 2-year resident, a renter, with no real ties to our community. I'm also not keen on Frances Bilak due to her well-documented disgraceful bullying of BHHS student Max Schwartz.
