Blood Drive, Arthritis Walk Keep Students Busy

Beverly Hills students are holding a blood drive Friday and joining a charity walk this weekend to help others and earn community service hours.

The end of the school year is fast approaching, and with it, the deadline for middle school and high school students to fulfill their .

Community service records must be turned in by June 11, and the next few days offer chances to help a good cause and perform community service at the same time.

The  student government, the Associated Student Body, is holding a blood drive Friday, June 1, from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the faculty cafeteria. All blood types are needed. The drive benefits the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

Donors must be at least 17 years old and weigh 110 pounds or more. Members of the public should sign in at the main high school office and will be directed to the cafeteria.

“We encourage all students and residents to come donate blood,” ASB President Andrew Schwab said.

All donors will receive a free movie pass to AMC Theatres. Students will get community service credits for working at the drive or donating blood.

On Sunday, June 3, dozens of students will be joining the 2012 Arthritis Walk, being held at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, to benefit the Arthritis Foundation. All Beverly Hills students are welcome to participate to earn community service credit.

A diagnosis of arthritis is not limited to senior citizens, as Horace Mann middle school teacher Caitlin Carter discovered. Her daughter Rhiannon, now in third grade, was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis at age 2.

“Rhiannon takes oral medications daily, and weekly injections, to keep her arthritis under control so she can participate in the daily activities of a third-grader,” Carter said. “We are committed to raising funds for the Arthritis Foundation to support kids like Rhiannon and hopefully someday find a cure.”

The three-mile walk starts at 8:30 a.m. There will be a closing ceremony at 11 a.m. featuring live entertainment, kids' activities and refreshments.

To register for the walk or to make a donation, click here, or call the local Arthritis Foundation at 323-954-5760, ext. 259. For more information about the walk or about arthritis in children, email Carter at ccarter@bhusd.org.
