Beverly Vista Interim Principal To Stay Another Year

The Board of Education Tuesday renewed Irene Stern's contract and promoted an administrator.

The Beverly Hills Board of Education voted 5-0 Tuesday to extend the contract of Interim Beverly Vista Principal Irene Stern by one year, to June 30, 2012.

Beverly Vista is now the only city school with an interim principal. Former interim Beverly Hills High School Principal Carter Paysinger was made permanent late last year.

In extending Stern’s contract, the board will have more time to conduct a search for two important administrative positions at the Beverly Hills Unified School District. is due to be replaced this summer and Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services Ilene W. Straus has announced that she is leaving BHUSD when her contract expires June 30.

Several local parent and media organizations have called for Douglas’ position to be extended for another year. But sources on the board say that prospect is unlikely. Last month the panel voted to spend $26,000 to hire Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, a Chicago search firm, to start the superindendent search.

One administrator who is staying is Dawnalyn Murakawa-Leopard. The board voted 5-0 to promote Murakawa-Leopard to assistant superintendent for human resources, allowing her to take on more senior-level duties. Murakawa-Leopard became BHUSD’s human resources director July 1, 2010, and before that she spent seven years as principal of .
