$10K Paid by Newport-Mesa Schools for Attorney to Monitor Ex-BHUSD Superintendent's Trial

Jeffrey Hubbard was convicted of misappropriating public funds when he headed Beverly Hills' public schools.

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District paid more than $10,000 to have a lawyer attend the trial of former Beverly Hills Unified School District Superintendent and report back what was happening in the courtroom, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Hubbard was the Newport-Mesa superintendent when he was of illegally diverting funds to former BHUSD facilities director —whom he was —while he was superintendent for Beverly Hills' public schools from 2004 until mid-2006.

According to the Times, N-MUSD paid $115 an hour to have a lawyer watch the case unfold. Laura Boss, the district's spokeswoman, told the newspaper that the school district was charged for 89 hours, bringing the bill to $10,235.

The day after his conviction, Hubbard was as N-MUSD superintendent and served .

Christiansen, who was tried separately last year, was convicted of four felony conflict of interest counts related to charges that she secretly negotiated a deal to be an independent BHUSD contractor while performing her duties as the district's facilities director. She was sentenced Jan. 5 to in state prison, but was allowed to remain free on $400,000 bail while her appeal is pending.
