Week in Review: MTA Holds Local Forum, Beverly Hills Prints Election Ballots

It was an election-focused week on Beverly Hills Patch as the city and voters get ready for the March 8 election.

It was an election-focused week on Beverly Hills Patch as the city and voters get ready for the March 8 election for two City Council seats. Also, there were more updates on the Westside Subway Extension after the Metropolitan Transit Authority held a community meeting in Beverly Hills. Here are the top five stories from the week of Jan. 30 – Feb. 5.

1) The week began with a preview of the evening’s MTA forum in Beverly Hills. Board of Education president Lisa Korbatov told parents that the district would to its dealings with the MTA as the agency considers a subway route that would tunnel under Beverly Hills High School. Then, at the meeting itself, MTA officials announced that they plan to hold in Beverly Hills in coming months.

2) After the MTA meeting, Patch reported how the took a strong position against the subway going underneath BHHS. Lili Bosse and Julian Gold were there in person to make their views known while an ill Nancy Krasne sent a parent to convey her message.

3) The were finally sent to the printer after a month-long delay over the legality of putting a two-hour free parking initiative on the ballot. The city had delayed printing the ballots – and sending absentee ballots to voters – to wait for a Court of Appeals final decision on the parking initiative. Measure 2P, as it is called, would require Beverly Hills to increase its free parking period to two hours at most city-owned lots.

4) City officials anticipate a for the upcoming fiscal year in the general fund, the resource that pays for public safety and other community services and which presently totals $157 million. City Treasurer Eliot Finkel shared the city's financial analysis with the Citizens' Budget Committee, a panel of residents and people who do business in the community. The public was also invited to the seminar at the Beverly Hills Public Library.

5) Of course, Patch had Normans sports coverage throughout the week. The BHHS boys soccer team allowed two short-handed goals in a 2-1 road loss to Inglewood Morningside.  The same day, the broke out offensively in a 64-43 road win over Morningside. On Friday, in frustrating fashion, 66-49, to Santa Monica. The defeat puts its playoff chances in jeopardy.
