Mayor Urges Santa Monica Boulevard Subway Route in Letter to MTA Board

On behalf of the City Council, Barry Brucker advocates for a Westside Subway Extension alignment that avoids tunneling under BHHS.

Mayor Barry Brucker has sent an open letter to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reiterating the City Council's support for a alignment that utilizes a Santa Monica Boulevard station in Century City.

Addressed to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who chairs the MTA board of directors, and Metro CEO Arthur Leahy, the letter reaffirms the council's opposition to a subway route that involves tunneling under the city's only high school.

“Among other issues, our will require additional square footage and modernization in the next few decades to meet the needs of the community,” the letter reads. “By severing our high school campus with a subway tunnel—even one that is subterranean at depths between 63 and 80 feet—the Metro proposal restricts our community’s ability to invest in the future at our high school. …”
