Council Reflects on Assault at Dodgers Game

Giants fan Bryan Stow was severely beaten on opening day.

The City Council has honored a baseball fan who was assaulted on opening day at Dodger Stadium.

Members issued a proclamation Thursday to San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow, who was severely beaten and injured March 31. Mayor Barry Brucker invited Stow and his family to Beverly Hills when he is able to make the trip.

"The Dodgers are the home team and inspire tremendous loyalty and passion among many sports fans," Councilman John Mirisch said. "But recent events reveal that passion for sports can be channeled in extremely negative ways. ... The brutal beating at Dodger Stadium is a tragedy that must not be repeated."

Mirisch praised efforts to ensure public safety at the stadium, "but good security or not, a sports fan should never have to be afraid when they attend games at a rival team's stadium."

Stow, a 42-year-old paramedic and father of two, "was repeatedly punched and kicked in the head in the stadium parking lot after the game," the San Jose Mercury News reported April 18. "He suffered brain damage from the attack and has been mostly in a medically-induced coma at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center since the beating."

His two attackers are still at large and a reward has been offered for information leading to their capture.

The reward is "at least $150,000, including $50,000 offered by the Los Angeles City Council and $25,000 by the Dodgers" as well as $50,000 from local radio D.J. Tom Leykis, the Los Angeles Times reported April 7.
