City Orders Three More Furlough Days

City offices will be closed April 1, May 6 and June 3.

City Hall and other city offices will close the first Friday of the month in April, May and June to reduce Beverly Hills' budget.

“The city is having financial woes right now,” Vice Mayor Barry Brucker told parents Tuesday at a PTA Council meeting. (Brucker was sworn in as mayor later that evening.)

All nonessential city services will be closed on the affected days, including the , and the . The furloughs do not apply to the Beverly Hills Unified School District, which is funded separately. Emergency services will remain unaffected.

The April 1, May 6 and June 3 closures represent the first time the city has furloughed workers during a non-holiday period, Brucker said. The city shut down nonessential services during the last week of 2010 as a cost-saving measure.

The city library remained open with limited hours during that time after a of $18,600. Brucker holds out hope that something similar could happen again to mitigate the need for furloughs in the upcoming months.

“We hope we will be able to eliminate one or more of the days if we find additional money,” he said.
