Council to Consider New Roxbury Park Community Center Proposals

The city is going to evaluate more modest plans for the facility after hearing residential concerns regarding the project.

The City Council will review additional proposals for a "scaled-down" modernization of the Roxbury Park Community Center, Mayor Barry Brucker said Tuesday.

In December the council  that came in over the $14.7 million budgeted for the project. Brucker then called a special  last week so residents could weigh in on the city's plans to revamp the facility.

"We heard wide-ranging points of views [at the public meeting], from do nothing except modernize the bathrooms, to build new within our budget restraints," Brucker told the Parent-Teacher Association Council, an umbrella group for the PTAs from the city's five schools.

Ideas and comments from last week's meeting are being sent to the council's Recreation and Parks liaison committee, which will come up with a more modest proposal for the community center, Brucker said. The liaison committee is comprised of Vice Mayor Willie Brien and Councilman Julian Gold.

"We will come up with a plan that will meet current and future recreational needs and still be sensitive to the concerns about traffic and parking," Brucker said. "All within our budget."

Meanwhile, Councilwoman Lili Bosse wrote on her Facebook page Tuesday, "Roxbury Park Community Center will not be built as the large expansion that was originally proposed. Stay tuned as there will be a timeline for the community to keep in the loop."

Bosse said the timeline for the process of rebuilding "will be transparent and will reflect the vision of our community."
