This Day in Beverly Hills History: BHPD Established

The Beverly Hills Police Department became a municipal organization 83 years ago today.

On Aug. 1, 1927, the Beverly Hills Police Department was formed as a municipal organization. Charles C. Blair, who was appointed City Marshal in 1919, became the first Chief of Police. The BHPD initially consisted of Blair, one captain, three lieutenants, four sergeants, four motor officers, 23 patrolmen and three clerks.

Today the BHPD has more than 100 officers and multiple bureaus. The current chief of police is David Snowden, a former brigadier general in the U.S. Army who was appointed in 2004. Snowden was previously a police chief in Costa Mesa and Baldwin Park.
