A suspicious envelope found by a secretary in a Beverly Hills City Hall office prompted an evacuation and street closure today, but the material turned out to be harmless, a police lieutenant said.

A secretary who was opening mail in a office on the fourth floor of City Hall saw an envelope with a white residue on the outside of the envelope," Beverly Hills police spokesman Lt. Lincoln Hoshino. "The secretary washed her hands and then called police."

Hoshino said that investigators determined the white residue was a natural part of the manufacturing process and was harmless.
