Selma Hayek's Brother in Sunset Boulevard Crash that Killed One

The brother of actress Salma Hayek was hospitalized with broken ribs today after the car he was driving collided with another vehicle in the Beverly Crest area of Los Angeles, killing his passenger, police said.

The crash occurred around 4:50 p.m. Sunday on Sunset Boulevard at Mapleton Drive, said Det. Zachary Hutchins of the Los Angeles Police Department's West Traffic Division.

“Sami Hayek, 40, a resident of Los Angeles, was driving a 2006 Ford GT eastbound on Sunset Boulevard when he lost control, crossed over into westbound traffic and collided with Alvin Gomez, a 20-year-old resident of Los Angeles driving a 2011 Toyota Tacoma,” Hutchins said.

“As a result of the collision the front passenger of the GT, a 43-year-old resident of Mexico, sustained major blunt force trauma to his body. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded and pronounced the front passenger dead at the scene,” the detective said.

“Sami Hayek sustained several broken ribs and a laceration to his head,” Hutchins said. Gomez suffered a broken foot and complained of body pain. Both were transported to UCLA Medical Center.

The coroner's office withheld the name of the deceased passenger pending family notification.

Investigators did not immediately say what caused Hayek to lose control.

Sami Hayek, Selma Hayek's younger brother, is a furniture designer.
