Man Gets 180 Days Lockup for Stealing Laker Championship Rings

Mejia Eddie Monterroso is also ordered to pay $14,000 in restitution.

A man who worked as a security guard pleaded no contest today to a grand theft charge stemming from the theft of three Los Angeles Lakers championship rings, along with gift cards from the team's El Segundo training facility.

Mejia Eddie Monterroso was immediately sentenced to 180 days in county jail and three years probation following his plea to one count of grand theft of personal property.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elden S. Fox also ordered Monterroso to pay nearly $14,000 in restitution, according the District Attorney's Office.

Monterroso, 23, was arrested Dec. 10 as he left the training facility in the 500 block of North Nash Street.

Police said a search of Monterroso's home in Inglewood “yielded evidence of the theft,” as well as two of the championship rings from the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

The thefts occurred while he worked the night shift, according to the District Attorney's Office.
