Join the BHPD Tuesday for the National Night Out Block Party

The police-community partnership strives to prevent crime and increase residential safety.

Help the raise awareness about crime, promote neighborhood safety and prevent drug use by attending the . The event is taking place from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday on North Hillcrest Road between Sunset Boulevard and Elevado Avenue, and will coincide with the BHPD’s fourth Neighborhood Watch block party.

“We have information about how to protect yourself against home burglaries, home robbery, auto burglaries, identity theft—anything you can think of,” BHPD Crime Prevention Officer Don Chase said about the event. “It’s one of the proactive things that we do here at the police department in engaging the community.”

There will be police and fire displays, an earthquake simulator, activities for children and food trucks, including the famous Grilled Cheese Truck. The Beverly Hills Rotary Club will be on hand to sell earthquake preparedness kits for the home and car that contain water, nonperishable food, glow sticks and first aid items.

Famed broadcaster and his wife, Shawn, are hosting the event. King is the block captain for his street, a community position developed by the BHPD as a means of assisting residents during a crisis, such as an earthquake or wild fire.

“The block captain organizes and creates a roster for their block,” Chase said. “On a lot of blocks you have some people that have certain skills. You might have a nurse on a block, you might have a doctor on a block. If you knew that ahead of time, you’d be better off [during an emergency].”

For more information on how to assist your neighborhood when disaster strikes—or if you’re interested in becoming a block captain—stop by the National Night Out event on North Hillcrest Road Tuesday evening. 

“As a police department we don’t want to respond after you’ve been a victim, but want you to have some information beforehand that can prevent anything from happening,” Chase said.
