D.A. Warns of 'Robo-Call' Scammers

Never give out banking information over the phone.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley warned consumers Tuesday of a new “robo-call” scam that attempts to get confidential banking information from unsuspecting victims.

The robo-calls play pre-recorded messages claiming to be from major banks, stating that there is a problem with the banking network. Then the call recipient is asked for verification of banking account information, credit and debit card numbers, and other personal identification numbers.

“Consumers need to be extremely wary of telephone calls requesting sensitive information about banking or credit cards,” Cooley said in a statement. “Legitimate banks and financial institutions do not call their customers to request personal identifying information or discuss banking network problems.”
