A Beverly Hills police detective who broke up a nationwide marijuana ring received a service award Monday from the city's Rotary Club along with a sergeant who works in community relations.

Detective George Elwell conducted a four-year investigation into the marijuana ring that involved 20 suspects, Sgt. Renato Moreno of the Beverly Hills Police Department said.

Several were charged with felonies such as conspiracy, robbery, arson, burglary, assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder. The suspects are in custody awaiting trial.

Sgt. Max Subin received an award for his work in harnessing real time social media outlets including Nixle, Facebook, Twitter and Vimeo, Moreno said. Through his use of social media, three suspects in an armed robbery at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and a sexual battery suspect were arrested.
