New Documentary Film "An Unknown Country" Chronicles The Escape Of 4,000 Jews From Nazi Europe To Unfamiliar Geo-Remote Ecuador

Now in post production "An Unknown Country" was inspired by the reunion of 48 Ecuador born and raised Jews who left after the holocaust to assimilate and raise families in the U.S. South Africa and Israel.

Reuniting at the Ecuadorian cities of their childhoods they tell their melancholy stories in candid interviews interspersed with fascinating archived footage showing scenes of their actual surroundings.

The saga begins when the Jews arrived in the torrid port city, Guayaquil, and faced and antithesis of the only culture ever known to them.

There in the sweltering humid tropics the Jews with their refined European thoughts, tastes and mannerisms encountered a piteous peasantry plagued with torturous infectious diseases and vast swarms of fierce exotic insects.

Many Jews moved on to Quito, a serene mountain town with a milder climate and quaint folkloric character.

Finally they were able to establish a vibrant prosperous cultural enclave.  In the Jewish tradition, these hard workers started a myriad of businesses which upgraded the quality of life for all.

They opened European style shops and restaurants, operated small factories, founded a synagogue and built schools.  They even created a live stage theatre and an athletic club.

"An Unknown Country" is co-produced by Beata Pozniak Daniels http://www.beata.com/newpage/biography/index.html  and Emmy Award winning writer and producer Eva Zelig who was born and raised in Ecuador's Jewish community.

Zelig's historically important childhood memories and participation in the unifying reunion evoked her talents to transmit a keen understanding to viewers and to tangibly touch their emotions.

Presently fund raising is the only obstacle in finishing up in a timely manner.
