Do You Support SB 1464, the 3-Foot Rule for Motorists Passing Bicyclists?

A bill has cleared the state Senate requiring automobiles to pass no closer than 3 feet to bicyclists. What do you think? Take our poll and tell us in the comments.

With the public call for a and a  being mulled over by City Council, Patch wants to know what you think about SB 1464.

SB 1464 would make it a legal requirement for automobiles to give bicyclists a minimum clearance of 3 feet when passing. The proposed state bill has been approved by the California Senate and is up for a vote by the state Assembly this Friday.

The California Assembly Transportation Committee voted in favor of the bill in June. An earlier version of the bill was vetoed by Gov. Jerry Brown because it would have required motorists to reduce their speed to at least 15 mph if providing 3 feet of passing space was not possible.

Do you support SB 1464? Vote in our poll and let us know what you think in the comments section below.

I am in full support of bycycle routes and anything that would make cycling safer in Beverly Hills. I cycle at night in BH about 4 times a week. Jonathan

@Jonathan Jan What, in your opinion, is the worst part of Beverly Hills to bike in? Santa Monica Boulevard? Wilshire? Would love to hear your thoughts.

I'm in support of laws that aid safer bicycling - but tell me any street where one can keep 3 feet from a bicycle. Streets are narrow - cars park on the streets and drive on the streets and there is nowhere where bikes can safely travel without a wide dedicated bike lanes. Now - tell me where we can afford to lose car lanes for a bike lane. The city is overbuilt with too many cars, too few parking areas, narrow streets and now tons of bikes.

It would be great if cars could give 3 feet of space for a bicycle, but many streets aren't wide enough. Bikers would basically be taking up a whole lane of traffic. In addition, there's nothing in this law that says bikers should be staying as far to the right as possible, and without that a biker could be impassable.

The following article about bike lanes is an okay, but the discussion that follows is quite good. http://ct.smartplanet.com/clicks?t=1149596032-1aebfee36a4bd6663d7fd075cd47c02e-bf&brand=SMARTPLANET&s=5
