Beverly Vista's faculty, parents and students make the new kids feel at home.

Today marks the start of the 2011-12 school year and for students joining a new district, the first day can be very scary.

When I was young, I was the new kid in classrooms in both England and Italy. Looking back, I realize it was a great experience. At the time it was terrifying.

My kids are starting this year and last week we were invited to a new student orientation. Principal Irene Stern and Assistant Principal Richard Waters, teachers, PTA members and volunteer students were there to greet the new students. Cookies and juice were served and a peer-to-peer tour of the school was provided.

School spirit T-shirts and hooded sweatshirts were on sale (Go Bulldogs!). Stern and Waters gave talks. Stern said that many faculty, including the assistant principal, are graduates of Beverly Vista and that many of the students' parents attended the school themselves.

Afterward, new students walked the grounds (my kids gave me the “get lost now or I’ll kill you” look). My boys went from high anxiety to excitement and smiles. The volunteers all deserve a big thanks!
