The working father of a nine-year-old boy and one-and-a-half year old girl exposed two important fathering secrets for the busy dad.

Columbus Short Daddy Tip #1:

Sleep train your children.

“Sleep training was very important,” Short said. “Whenever her sleep schedule is off, her mood is completely different – and that effects a lot of things.”

Michael Gonzales, M.D., pediatrician and KevinMD.com contributing writer, recommends launching ‘Operation Peaceful Night’ only after an infant has reached 10 lbs., or is at least two months old, and well. Once the preliminary rules are in place, Gonzales advises removing the infant from the parents’ bedroom and moving the bassinet or crib to the infant’s room; as research has shown parents and infants who sleep in the same room tend to have a more restless sleep. Finally, Gonzales explains that behaviors that are rewarded continue. Therefore, rewarding a crying child with a warm hug and a lullaby will only encourage the boisterous behavior.

Robert “Daddy” Nickell, host and executive producer of “My Life As A Dad,” the first show of its kind dedicated to Dad, said it’s essential to tend to children’s needs, yet know when to say, “No,” and stand your ground. The father of seven is the author of hundreds of syndicated articles read across the US and Canada and is the founder of Daddy and Company, the perfect gifts for Dad and home of his renowned ‘Daddy Scrubs.’

“We bring in celebrity dads from movies, television and professional sports – men that many fathers admire – and get the scoop on their life as a dad,” Nickell stated. “Our to-the-point, man-to-man episodes offer an accessible, entertaining resource for dads who want to see their favorite stars in the ‘Dad’ light… finding a common bond in their parenting styles and even helping them become the best dads they can be.”

Columbus Short Daddy Tip #2:

Be present.

Simply stated by the “Scandal” star, being present is key to fostering happy, loving feelings between the father and child.

“You can be home and be on your Blackberry,” Short said. “Put it down, and be engaged. Let them know they are important.”

With a hectic schedule filled with long, sometimes irregular hours, Short believes being in the moment with your child is vital.

According to a Pew Research Center analysis of the Census Bureau data on how Americans spend their time, during an average week, modern dads spend nearly triple the time on direct child care, and more than double the time on housework than their fathers or grandfathers did in the 1960s. The modern dad is busy, juggling work, family and unexpected stresses of life. However, new and active dads like Columbus Short can employ his words of wisdom and work on being present and attuned to their children and families.

“Without a doubt, especially for the working dad, taking the time to be there for your children is a necessity,” Nickell said. “Developing that emotional bond, listening to their interests and helping them grow is one of the most gratifying aspects of fatherhood.”

“My Life As A Dad” is filmed in the Parent Family Network Studios in the South Bay area of Southern California. The set is designed for the expectant, new, active, and experienced dad.
