City Mourns Loss of Joel Pressman

Beloved and highly respected Beverly Hills High School performing arts teacher passes away after teaching students for 38 years.

Joel Pressman, 63, passed away Monday after his battle with cancer.

The beloved Beverly Hills High School performing arts instructor and cantor was a father figure, friend and an incredible influence on many throughout the community. He was highly-respected and taught his students for the past 38 years. Pressman was also a graduate of Beverly Vista and Beverly Hills High School.

The school district notified families Monday afternoon of Mr. Pressman's passing, and a moment of silence was held Wednesday night during the City Council meeting.

"He was an incredible teacher," said Mayor John Mirisch, noting Pressman's passion and commitment to inspire his students.

Mirisch added he was a journalism student during his time at the high school while Pressman was a teacher and reviewed some of his performances. Serving with Pressman on the Facilities Advisory Committee, Mirisch said he was opinionated and strong in his convictions.

Hundreds attended a gathering in Will Rogers Memorial Park in September with Mr. Pressman, many being his former students. An organizer of the event launched an open Facebook group page for Joel Pressman. Tributes from Beverly Hills High School alum and students continue hitting the social media waves.

Pressman oversaw the choir program, which consists of Concert Choir, Minniesingers and Madrigal singers, and was involved in countless successful programs at the high school and in greater Los Angeles.

In October, one former BHHS student took it upon herself to connect Pressman with one his favorite composers from London.

Services will be private. There will be a public memorial at a time to be announced. Donations in his name may be made to Idyllwild Arts or the American Cancer Society. Pressman's full obituary can be found in the Los Angeles Times
