HOLLYWOOD, Calif.
What holds true for chewing gum can also hold true for music. Indeed the
Hollywood Master Chorale (HMC) promises that those who attend its upcoming
holiday performance, “This Endris Night”, on Saturday, December 7 at 7:30 p.m.
at Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church will find that doubling the pleasure –
hearing not one but two versions of a 15th century English carol –
will easily lead to double the fun.

But, first, they may wonder exactly what an “endris” night
is.

“The title of our
concert is drawn from the name of a 15th century carol celebrated for its
lyricism and haunting imagery,” explains Artistic Director Lauren Buckley
Schaer.  “Loosely translated as ‘this recently past night,’ the poem
addresses the dual nature of the child Messiah who was born in a manger but
will have kings bowing at his feet.  And though he is the Savior, he is
still a child and tells his mother that if he should cry, she should comfort
him with a lullaby.”

The Hollywood Master
Chorale will be performing two very different versions of this text, Schaer
adds.

“The first setting,
by John Carol Case, allows listeners to absorb the text in the style of a
comforting, repetitive lullaby,” says Schaer.  “The second setting, by
Stephen Paulus, embraces the ‘otherness’ of the poem by the use of polytonality
and the ever exotic harmonic minor.”

HMC will also present Camille Saint-Saëns' Oratorio de Nöel,
Op. 12.
“Composed in 1858 in under
two weeks, this work is a welcome alternative to the always popular Messiah,” Schaer says.  “This short
work was originally written for string and organ accompaniment, but HMC will be
presenting their take on the masterpiece, using a brass quintet in lieu of the
string orchestra.”

On the program as well are Benjamin Britten’s A Hymn to the Virgin, William Walton's What Cheer, and yet another work
offering ‘double the pleasure and fun’ – Psalm 133, Hinei ma Tov (Behold how good and pleasant it is when people dwell
in unity). HMC will perform one setting of the psalm by local composer Michelle
Green Willner and another by Nick Strimple.

Nor is this the first time HMC has collaborated with Willner
and Strimple. Both served as mentor composers for the Chorale’s Voices of LA
project, a two-year program where young composers were selected to write choral
works inspired by William Blake’s book of poetry, Songs of Innocence and
Experience.

“I’m really excited about this concert,” confides Schaer.
“It’s a wonderful mix of modern and traditional, tender and robust, meditative
and joyful.  It is truly music for everyone and we look forward to sharing
it with our community.”

In fact, music lovers throughout the community will have yet
one more opportunity to experience ‘double the pleasure and fun’ of hearing the
Hollywood Master Chorale perform when the choir is featured at this year's Los
Angeles Holiday Brass Concert – an organization that produces holiday concerts
to raise scholarship money for the International Women's Brass Conference – on
Tuesday, December 3 at Immanuel Presbyterian Church.  HMC will present
selections from "This Endris Night."

Tickets for “This Endris Night” are $20 for general
admission and $15 for students and seniors and may be purchased online at www.hollywoodmasterchorale.org

Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church is located at 505 North Rodeo Drive in

ABOUT THE HOLLYWOOD
MASTER CHORALE

The
Hollywood Master Chorale (HMC) is excited to be embarking upon its 19th
season of glorious music making. This non-profit all-volunteer chorale has
been performing for the greater Los Angeles community since 1995.  From
Renaissance to rock, the HMC takes pride in promoting masterworks for the
future as well as paying tribute to those of the past. Through its recent
"Voices of LA" project, the HMC has gained a reputation for inspiring
and creative programming.

The HMC
offers three major concerts each year, in addition to performing for civic,
community, and private social functions.  Concerts have been given at the
Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, West Hollywood 25th Anniversary
celebration, Zipper Concert Hall, the Torrance Invitational Song
Festival, and the Russian Cultural Festival of West
Hollywood. The Chorale’s concerts have included participation by such
respected ensembles as the LA Doctors Symphony, the Calabasas Orchestra, the
Mark Twain Ringers, and the Ebell Chorale.

As a
community-oriented group, the HMC is pleased to share its concerts with music
lovers who might not otherwise have the opportunity, by offering tickets to a
dozen non-profit organizations that provide invaluable services to the
community, as well as to several local schools.

Artistic
Director Lauren Buckley Schaer has provided a fresh vision for the chorale’s
repertoire since 2011, creating a rapport with the audience through her
musicality and programming.

Leaving the
hall after a recent concert, one guest was overheard saying,“ I feel like I
just got back from Heaven.” Other comments made by the audience include:
"I got goosebumps;" "Inspiring! Superb! Overwhelmingly
beautiful, original and creative. Thank you so much!"

One
composer, upon hearing his own composition, wrote: "Yesterday was such a
magical performance for me and my family. I was deeply moved by the
performance, just an amazing level of musicianship and raw emotion."
