The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills Celebrates American Cheese Month With The Fabulous Beekman Boys From The Cooking Channel

The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills is celebrating the third annual American Cheese Month with an in-store appearance by Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge, the makers of Beekman 1802 Blaak goat/cow blend cheese, who star in “The Fabulous Beekman Boys” on The Cooking Channel. The tasting will take place Tuesday, October 29, 2013, from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Reservations are not necessary.

The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills is known for fostering producers of artisanal foods, including American artisanal cheeses. Norbert Wabnig, the founder of The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills, says, “Every year we discover new cheeses worthy of presenting to our discerning clientele. The American artisanal cheese movement is growing and we're excited to have been selected as the exclusive retailer on the west coast to have Beekman 1802 Blaak, which is produced in limited quantities, with the milk from Josh and Brent's own goat herd.”

According to Tony Princiotta, general manager and buyer at The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills, “The American artisanal cheese making traditions come from Europe. But American cheeses we've discovered over the last decade,  like Hook's 15 year Aged Cheddar and Cypress Grove's Humboldt Fog, have become award winning in their own right and have grown up and left the old world behind.”

Artisanal foods are made by hand, in small batches. A long time supporter of the artisanal effort, Wabnig created an award, The  American Artisanal Treasure Awards (AATA), nine years ago, to honor the makers of artisanal cheese and gourmet foodstuffs. Both Hooks and Humboldt Fog are previous recipients of the AATA.

Some of the Cheese Store of Beverly Hills' current favorite American artisanal cheeses include:

About The Beekman Boys and Beekman 1802 Blaak

Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell are the founders of Beekman 1802, a TV ShowMercantile, bestselling cookbook and memoir, website and tourism destination all inspired by the Beekman 1802 Farm in Sharon Springs, NY. In 2012, the duo competed and won the grand prize in CBS’s The Amazing Race.

Beekman 1802 Blaak is an artisanal cheese produced from the goats at Beekman Farm, made during the months of March through October. Blaak (which means burnt in Dutch) is an Italian-style semi-hard cheese made from a 60:40 mix of goat and cow milk giving the cheese a mild but distinctive flavor. In keeping with traditional cheesemaking practices, this rare cheese is aged in caves for 3 months and coated with ash at each turning to promote the ripening of the wheel. The resulting edible black rind gives the cheese its name.
