Week in Review: Football Fight, a Centenarian and Increasing Water Rates

This week also sees the end of Beverly Hills Patch's graduation coverage.

It's time for the weekly roundup of what took place in Beverly Hills from June 20-26.

SUNDAY

The week began with a continuation of Patch's graduation coverage. Horace Mann's eighth-grade culmination came first.

MONDAY

The day kicked off with a story about a sideline-clearing skirmish between BHHS and rival Culver City at a weekend football tournament.

Then came our Rescue Dog of the Week post. We met Violet, a cat-loving American bulldog.

Columnist David De Bacco brought us his weekly Fresh from the Farmers' Market piece, letting us know that figs and dates are in.

Next up was a photo slide show of the 7-on-7 passing tournament hosted by the Normans over the weekend.

TUESDAY

The day started out sweet with the winning pie recipe from the annual pie-baking contest at the farmers' market. This year's winner was Teri Hiles' blueberry cream pie.

Patch's graduation coverage came to an end today with a photo recap of the BHHS commencement ceremony.

WEDNESDAY

Midweek began with a post about Arthur Gardner, who was honored by the  City Council in recognition of his 100th birthday.

Next came a video about the city cutting back on library's hours to save funds. Patch caught up with residents at the library to talk about the move.

The day ended with a story about plans to install a hybrid ice rink in the city during the winter season.

THURSDAY

Thursday started with a piece on the Explorer program, a teen law enforcement course that has been but on hold due to budget cuts.

A story about increasing water rates in Beverly Hills came next.

Last up for the day was a Chef's Corner post. We met Matthew Carpenter of the newly opened Mediterranean restaurant Momed.

FRIDAY

The day began with a Q & A session with a water utilities expert as a followup on our post about increasing water rates in the city.

Then came coverage of a Planning Commission meeting where more than a dozen residents complained about overgrown foliage obstructing the views from their homes.

The workweek ended with a post on a nighttime hike at Franklin Canyon Park on over the weekend.

SATURDAY

The weekend started off with a video about "The Manor" playing at Greystone Mansion. The sold-out show is performed in multiple rooms of the historic home.

The week ended with our first Student Spotlight, which features an outstanding Beverly Hills student doing great things with his or her summer.
