This Day in Beverly Hills History: Jewelry Heist at Beverly Wilshire Hotel

A jewelry store in the Beverly Wilshire Hotel was robbed by four men with submachine guns 25 years ago today.

On Aug. 22, 1985, four men armed with Uzi-style submachine guns robbed a jewelry store in the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The thieves fired a warning shot in the lobby before snatching $250,000 worth of gold and diamond jewelry. As they fled the scene, another warning shot was fired at a former policeman who tried to pursue the bandits. None of the patrons in the hotel or store were hurt, though one of the robbers reportedly cut himself badly after smashing the glass on a display case.
