Road Closures at Sunset Bridge to Continue Through Oct.

Expect detours and traffic delays near the Sunset Bridge during the next month.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has released two sets of road closures that will be implemented while crews reconstruct the southern side of the Sunset Bridge.

The closures are necessary "to raise the street intersections and utilities to meet the new height" of the reconstructed bridge, according to Metro. After the southern side of the bridge is finished, crews will demolish the northern half of the bridge and begin reconstruction there. Metro expects demolition and reconstruction on the northern half of the bridge to take approximately 12 months.

Closures affecting the southern section of the Sunset Bridge will take place in two phases:

Phase I

  • Sept. 30 to Oct. 14
  • Day and night closures of eastbound Sunset Boulevard to the southbound 405 Freeway on-ramp.

Phase II

  • Oct. 15 to Oct. 29
  • Day and night closures of north Church Lane between Sunset Boulevard and the southbound 405 Freeway ramps.
  • Day and night closures of westbound Sepulveda Way between Sepulveda and Sunset boulevards.
  • Weekday closures of the southbound Sunset Boulevard off-ramp from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Emergency responders will have access to the roads, per Metro.

Detailed Metro closures are as follows:

Phase I:

Sept. 30 to Oct. 14

  • Traffic on eastbound Sunset Boulevard to the southbound 405 Freeway will be detoured to northbound Church Lane to the southbound 405 Freeway.
  • The northbound ramps and westbound Sunset Boulevard to the southbound 405 Freeway will remain up and running.
  • Sunset Boulevard will operate with two lanes in each direction.

Phase II:

Oct. 14-16

  • Sunset Boulevard will be closed between Thurston Avenue and Gunston Drive on the night of Oct. 14 and Oct. 15.
  • Eastbound Sunset Boulevard to the southbound 405 Freeway on-ramp and the northbound 405 ramps will be closed as early as 7 p.m. Ramps will be open during the day.
  • During the weekend of Oct. 15-16, traffic on Sunset Boulevard will operate with one lane in each direction.

Oct. 17-29

  • Eastbound Sunset Boulevard to the southbound 405 Freeway on-ramp will be up and running.
  • Traffic traveling westbound on Sunset Boulevard to the southbound 405 Freeway on-ramp will be allowed to turn left onto the southbound freeway.
  • Traffic traveling eastbound on Sunset Boulevard to northbound Church Lane will continue eastbound on Sunset to southbound Veteran Avenue, to westbound Montana Avenue, to northbound Sepulveda Boulevard and then back to Church Lane.
  • Traffic traveling westbound on Sunset Boulevard to northbound Church Lane will be detoured at Sepulveda Way to northbound Sepulveda Boulevard and then back to Church Lane.
  • Traffic traveling southbound on Church Lane to Sunset Boulevard will be detoured to continue southbound via Sepulveda Boulevard to: 
    • Eastbound Montana Avenue, to northbound Veteran Avenue and then back to Sunset.
    • Westbound Montana Avenue, to northbound Church Lane and then back to Sunset.
  • Sunset Boulevard will operate with two lanes in each direction.
