Dr. Frank Ryan’s Last Tweet

Not long before the Beverly Hills-based plastic surgeon died in a car accident, he sent out a TwitPic of his border collie during a hike.

At 4:10 p.m. on Aug. 16, Dr. Frank Ryan—the famous Beverly Hills-based celebrity plastic surgeon—tweeted a photo of his dog looking out over the California coastline.

"Border collie jill [sic] surveying the view from atop the sand dune," he wrote.

About 20 minutes later, Ryan's Jeep Wrangler would . A witness to the attempted rescue told TMZ.com that Ryan was still moving while trapped inside the vehicle and bleeding badly from two head lacerations, but by the time lifeguards pulled him out of the Jeep, there were no signs of life.

The Ventura County Fire Department tried hoisting Ryan using a helicopter, but the attempt was called off and he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, according to TMZ.com. Later that day, the Ventura County Medical Examiner's office announced Ryan had died of blunt force head injuries.

TMZ.com also reported that Ryan's border collie, Jill, was pulled from the ocean after the crash, suffering injuries to her eye and paw. She was transported to a pet emergency facility by the California Highway Patrol, according to RadarOnline.com. The dog is expected to recover from her injuries.

Before the accident, Ryan and his dog had been hiking coastal sand dunes.

"After 25 years of driving by, I finally hiked to the top of the giant sand dune on the pch [sic] west of Malibu," he tweeted from his Blackberry at 3:45 p.m. "Much harder than it looks! Whew!"

Media outlets have reported that Ryan's famous celebrity clients included KISS frontman Gene Simmons, Motley Crue frontman Vince Neil, model Adrianne Curry, actor Lorenzo Lamas and TV personalities Joan and Melissa Rivers.

The plastic surgeon is perhaps best known for performing 10 procedures in one day on Heidi Montag of MTV's reality series The Hills. In a January 2010 interview, Ryan told RadarOnline.com that the marathon operation was not a health risk.

"In Heidi's case—in a healthy 23-year-old girl—this was perfectly appropriate," Ryan said of Montag's surgeries, which included a breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, a chin reduction and liposuction. "This is what young women and men are doing all the time…in terms of procedures together."

The night after the accident, a candlelight vigil was held in honor of Ryan at Zuma Beach in Malibu. Attendees included Janice Dickinson, Melissa Rivers, Gary Busey, Lisa Rinna, Harry Hamlin, Jason Davis and Dennis Haskins, according to media reports.

Ryan is also known for his philanthropic work. Before his final two tweets on the day of his death, his most recent tweet had been sent out five days prior. The message was about the Bony Pony Ranch, part of the Dr. Frank Ryan Foundation.

"We have another ranch day coming up this weekend," he tweeted at 6:46 p.m. on Aug. 11. "The kids always like knowing that our mentors like garcelle [sic] had to work hard to "make it."

Ryan created the foundation in 1994. The organization's mission is to help underprivileged children and teens excel in life. The Bony Pony Ranch is a 26-acre horse ranch in Malibu that hosts day and weekend camps, leadership and life training workshops, nature workshops, sports activities and mentoring.

The foundation also sponsors the removal of gang-related tattoos, as well as the removal of scars and birthmarks.

Ryan will be laid to rest in his hometown of Toledo, OH, after a private memorial service in Malibu, according to TMZ.com.

A brief obituary on his home page says that Ryan was preceded in death by his father, Frank J. Ryan Sr., and is survived by his mother, Mary Kate Ryan, and many cousins, aunts, uncles and other family members.

Dr. Frank Ryan's office is located at 9675 Brighton Way, Ste. 340.
