Hiking Under the Full Moon
This Saturday, Franklin Canyon Park stays open late for a guided trek.
For those who enjoy a nighttime hike but fear getting lost in the dark, Franklin Canyon Park offers a solution: a trek guided by a naturalist and illuminated by a full moon.
The "Full Moon Adventure Hike" takes place this Saturday, June 26 at 8:30 p.m. Participants are asked to meet at the lower parking lot next to the Franklin Canyon Ranch.
"It's a chance for people to take out their iPod earplugs, turn off their cell phones and listen to the sounds of nature," said Robin Smith, program assistant at the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, which preserves and manages the park space. "There's already a dedicated group of people who exercise in the canyon during the daylight hours, but at night the canyon turns into another place entirely. During the hike you will hear owls hooting, coyotes howling and the sound of flapping bat wings flying over your head."

The nighttime hike is moderately strenuous but is open to all ages. Participants climb the park's most difficult course, the Hastain Trail, which leads to the park summit. Hikers are rewarded with views of June's full moon overlooking Beverly Hills. The entire trek takes about two hours, and comfortable shoes are advised.
All events at Franklin Canyon Park are free. More information about this event and others may be found here, or by calling 310-858-7272.
