Memorial Garden to Be Dedicated on 9/11

Beverly Hills' tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks is nearing completion.

Two separate ceremonies will mark the unveiling of the Beverly Hills 9/11 Memorial Garden on Sunday, the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Located at the corner of North Rexford Drive and Burton Way, the memorial features a 30-foot, 1,900-pound from the twin tower wreckage. Engraved in the memorial's base are the names of the nearly 3,000 people who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, as well as those who perished on United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania.

The first dedication is at 6:45 a.m. to coincide with the collapse of 2 World Trade Center, the south tower, at 9:59 a.m. EST (6:59 a.m. PST). The north tower, 1 World Trade Center, fell at 10:28 a.m. EST (7:28 PST).

“At 6:45 a.m. there will be a brief ceremony in memory of when the first tower came down,” said Reggie Sully, the memorial’s project manager. “It’s a quiet tribute. The public is invited.”

Fire Chief Tim Scranton, the fire department and a police honor guard will be present. The ceremony is expected to last about 20 minutes.

From 4-6 p.m., the Beverly Hills City Council is holding its dedication ceremony with state Sen. Fran Pavley and Assemblyman Mike Feuer. The keynote speaker will be Brad Burlingame, brother of Capt. Charles Burlingame III, pilot of United Airlines Flight 77, which was hijacked and flown into the Pentagon.

One of two items belonging to Charles Burlingame recovered from the crash scene at the Pentagon was the prayer card from his mother’s funeral, which reads, “I did not die.”

“I don’t know how spiritual you are, but we felt this was somehow Mom miraculously saying, ‘Don’t worry, I’ve got him,’ ” Brad Burlingame said in an interview with West Hollywood Patch.
