'90210' Home Up for Sale but Not in Beverly Hills

Kelly and Donna's beachfront digs are on the market in Hermosa.

Though it made this town the envy of Gen Xers everywhere, Beverly Hills, 90210 was seldom filmed within city limits.

The series was produced in Van Nuys. West Beverly High School was actually Torrance High School. The Walsh family home, located in Brentwood for the series pilot, moved to Altadena once the show was picked up. And the college-years, beachfront home of Kelly and Donna—where the latter shacked up with David before getting hitched—is down in Hermosa Beach. And it's for sale.

What was portrayed on the hit show as a gray and white apartment building with bright blue awnings is actually a 3,670-square-foot Cape Cod-style residence built in 1915. Previously a vacation rental, the home is located at 3500 the Strand in Hermosa Beach. It's been on the market since February, and the price has dropped nearly $1 million since then.

"It's a beautiful home, no doubt, but it gives people an unrealistic expectation of what it's like to live in L.A.," said Hermosa Beach homeowner Alicia Powell, adding that the TV portrayal of the property misrepresents the financial demand that comes with living in a beachfront mansion.

Sunkissed characters on 90210 struggled to solve problems revolving around love and revenge, instead of mortgages, electricity bills and maintenance costs.

"I live on the beach and it's no picnic," Powell said. "I have high property taxes."

90210 is not the house's only credit. It also made a guest appearance in the 1988 comedy My Stepmother Is an Alien starring Kim Basinger and Dan Aykroyd.
