Celebrating St. Patrick's Day the Stay at Home FOODIE Way

The stay at home FOODIE makes a plea for eating the right kind of green food this St. Patrick's Day.

Can we talk about St. Patrick's Day for a minute? Why is it an American holiday? Why must my first grader celebrate it at El Rodeo by wearing green and warding off leprechauns?

I have nothing against the Irish. My kids both have Irish middle names somehow. Don't ask. We're Jewish. Fifth generation Los Angelenos. And yet, while naming my kids according to Jewish tradition, somehow Irish names stuck. Go figure.

In any case, I really don't get St. Patrick's Day. And I REALLY don't get green food. Wait, let me clarify. I don't get dyed green food. Food coloring is just gross, if you ask me.

Why do we drink green beer, eat slime-colored ketchup and run out and get green bagels? Why can't we just celebrate St. Patrick's Day (if we must) with decorations of four-leaf clovers, rainbows, pots of gold and Irish soda bread?

If you insist on eating green food, I'd like to make a plea. Can you please eat food that's actually green? Like pesto. Or guacamole. Or a salad. Something that's not made brighter in a lab. Something that has some chlorophyll. Please!
