St. Barnabas Senior Services Volunteers to Deliver Meals and Personalized Greeting Cards to Homebound Seniors on Thanksgiving

On Thanksgiving, community volunteers from St. Barnabas Senior Services (SBSS), a dynamic nonsectarian, non-profit organization that is widely recognized for its innovative programs, will deliver 200 traditional holiday meals to homebound seniors living in the Greater Hollywood area.

Volunteers will gather at Kingsley Manor Retirement Community (1055 North Kingsley Drive in Los Angeles) at 8 a.m. on November 28 to prepare for delivery around the city, starting at 9 a.m.

“For many of these dedicated volunteers, delivering Thanksgiving dinner has become an annual tradition,” said Carol Lee Thorpe, vice president of Programs and Services for SBSS.

The holiday meals will include turkey, dressing as well as many traditional Thanksgiving dishes. SBSS provides more than 50,000 meals to Los Angeles’ vulnerable seniors each year through its Home Delivered Meals Program. This is one of a continuum of comprehensive programs provided by SBSS to empower older adults to live well, feel well and age well.

This year as an added bonus, volunteers from SBSS’ Mid-City Senior Center and Hollywood Senior Center located at Bethany Towers Retirement Community, created hand-made personal Thanksgiving greeting cards filled with good wishes to accompany each meal.

“Bethany Towers residents were proud to join visitors at the Mid-City Senior Center and Hollywood Senior Center located at Bethany Towers in creating the beautiful cards that will greet homebound seniors along with their Thanksgiving meals on November 28,” said Shaun Rushforth, administrator at Bethany Towers, a Front Porch managed retirement community and home to the St. Barnabas Hollywood Senior Center.

“Creating the greeting cards to complement the meals is an opportunity for talented seniors to share their creativity and good wishes, bringing a little extra love to our community’s most vulnerable older adults,” added long-time SBSS volunteer Joyce Henderson who coordinated the card-making workshop.

Earlier this year, SBSS and Bethany Towers welcomed SBSS to its complex.  Unprecedented in the Greater Los Angeles Area, Bethany Towers and SBSS are the first organizations to initiate a collaboration between a full-service retirement community and a senior center.
